Mary Delphine Quinn

Born In: Sydney Mines
Born: March 20th, 1939

Passed on: May 28th, 2017

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Mary Quinn. Mary passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by family.
Born in Sydney Mines on March 20, 1939, Mary was the daughter of the late Stan and Isabel (O’Neil) Forrest. Upon graduation from Normal College in Truro she began a 35 year teaching career which included schools in Georges River, Alder Point and Florence. She lovingly touched the lives of so many children, parents and colleagues. From working with students in Grade 2, teaching cursive writing, preparing children for their first communion to helping friends and family to crochet, knit, quilt and sew. She was a teacher to children and adults alike. We all have many of her completed treasures. She loved to go shopping for hours and hours, and could come home with only a single spool of thread or ball of yarn. Bus trips to Bangor, Maine to shop were a necessity of life!
She was a former member and past president of the Florence Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the Florence Fire Hall Ladies Auxiliary. She was an active member of the Knotty Nannies. Mary is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Alex Quinn, son Sandy (Corinne), and daughters Michelle (David) Kempt and Arlene (Alex) MacDougall.
Grandma to 7 grandchildren who she loved to spoil: Kathleen, Ryan, Matthew, Emily, Devlin, Brendan and Maeve. Also left to mourn are her brothers Tommy (Janet), and Joe (Dorothy), and sisters Myra MacDonald and Isabel Steffens. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Jimmy and sister Thelma Kaiser.
Thank you to Dr. Paul Hickey and Laurie, who did everything they could, day and night for Mom and Dad. Thank you also to the staff of the Northside General Hospital and Continuing Care Staff. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Reception to follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia. Words of comfort may be forwarded to Mary’s family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
