Passed on: June 10th, 2017
With heavy hearts, we, the family of Garfield Victor Jenkins announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Palliative Care, on Saturday, June 10, at the age of 91.
Dad was born in Sydney Mines on September 2, 1925, to the late Mark and Priscella (Anthony) Jenkins.
In his early years Dad worked for Hartigan’s, and then Cape Breton Dairymen, retiring from Scotsburn Dairy in 1990.
Dad and Mom shared a special bond for 77 years. They took great pleasure in going for a drive and a meal out, whether it be Vi’s Restaurant, or their table by the fireplace at the Clansmen Restaurant.
Dad was a loving father, and always put his family first, taking much pride and joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandson Shane Pye always went everywhere with Poppy and Nannie, and later would be Poppy’s driver.
He will be forever missed by his loving wife, Ruth (Halliday); sons, Laird (Brother) (Lillian) and Charlie (Joan); daughters, Kathy (David Julian Sr.) and Tammy (Joey Pye); his seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; sister, Loretta Higdon, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Vaughan Mark; brothers, Walter and Mark; sisters, Marjorie Pyke and Rose Bungay; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kohlsmith and Karen Pero for their kindness and excellent care of Dad, also Michelle Finney, the doctors and nurses of Palliative Care and the VON.
Visitation for Garfield Jenkins will be held today (Monday), June 12, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.
