CHIPMAN, Eugene William - 97, of Kentville and Tupperville, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on November 15, 1913, in Tupperville, Annapolis County, he was the son of the late Louis and Florence (Williams) Chipman. Having graduated from BRHS in 1932, he taught school in Granville Beach for a year, attended Acadia University and subsequently graduated from McGill with a BSc in Agriculture. He spent a few years in Guatemala working in tropical crop research. He was a Veteran of the Second World War having served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a navigator and instructor and was a member of 8 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron. In 1946 he took over control of the family farm in Tupperville and began work as a horticulturist at the Kentville Research Station. He propagated the well-known Scotia Tomato. He authored many papers and booklets that were published around the world in different languages. Chip was an Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Society for Horticulture Science, the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists and the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association. He also held an Honourary Membership in Horticulture Nova Scotia. He retired in 1978 from the Kentville Research Station and enjoyed travelling and continued to be actively involved in the family farm. Chip was an avid reader and kept up to date on current affairs. His retirement years were enriched by his long association and enjoyment of the camaraderie with The Kentville Gyro Club, the Dukes of Kent Barbershop Harmony Society and the Glooscap Curling Club. Chip was a farmer extraordinaire, researcher, dedicated husband, cherished father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Gladys Adelia Miller; three daughters, Betty (Hugh) Simpson, Wolfville; Nancy Chipman (Larry Arsenault), Paris, Ontario; Susan Chipman, Fairfield, Iowa; two sons, Bill, New Minas; Robert (Margie), Tupperville; grandchildren, Tania, Andrea and David Simpson; Kathryn, Suzanne and Julie Arsenault; Ryan, Emma, Adam, Allie, Leah and Eric Chipman; great grandchildren, Claire, Rose, Eden, Finn and Ella; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise and Helen and a grandson, Colin. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service followed by a reception was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2011 in the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, Kentville, Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Round Hill Cemetery, Annapolis County. Family flowers only by request.
