It is with profound sorrow that the family of Eileen Burns announces her passing on Monday, July 3 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on October 19, 1925, she was the daughter the late Florence Gertrude (Ellis) and Richard Benjamin Norkett. Her early years were spent growing up in North Sydney. She was longtime member of St. Joseph Parish, Sydney.
Mrs. Burns is survived by her daughter, Eileen Burns (Ken Garland), Sydney, and
Her, sons, Frank (Myrene Glass), Calgary, Joseph, Sydney and Peter (Elizabeth),
Halifax. In addition, surviving are her four very special grandchildren, Edgar (Becca) Eileen, Francis and Michael Burns of Halifax. She is also survived by sister,
Mrs. Doris Thomas, North Sydney, and brother, John Norkett (Ethna) Glen Haven; as well as various nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Edgar Burns of Sydney.
She was also predeceased by sisters, Joan Dooley and Mae Rossiter; sisters-in-law, Marie MacDonald, Betty MacLean, Pearl Blois and Frances MacDonald.
Mom studied nursing at the City Hospital. She moved to Halifax with her husband Edgar, during the Second World War. On returning to Sydney, she and her husband started their family, a prime focus of their love and attention. She supported her husband in his career as an independent businessman in sales. Later Eileen and husband Edgar owned and operated Eileen's Ladies Wear until their retirement in 1992.
“The Store” provided the opportunity to make many friends in our community and the Montreal fashion industry.
Eileen had many interests and loved a good debate and conversation. She and her husband enjoyed salmon fishing and spent many years on the shores of Loch Lomond. She often claimed it was her white sneakers that attracted all the salmon to shore for them to catch!
Eileen was an avid reader, was interested in every form of art, and loved gardening, having that special amazing ability to make anything grow. She had a keen interest in everything, and was an inquisitive and dynamic person. She loved her iPad, laptop and the ability the internet gave her to access the world and connect with people. For years she enjoyed the companionship of her pet cockatiels – Buddy and Angel – and the many finches that she had.
She devoted her life to her husband and family and was most happywhen spending time with them. She will be sadly missed and always cherishedin our hearts. We loved her dearly and are so proud of her.
The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Paul Murphy for his care and concern over many years.
