John Brown

John Brown

Brown, John (Jackie) Hilton- 77, Shelburne, passed away on July 22, 2017 at Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. He was born on June 21, 1940 in Springhill to Hilton and Christena Brown. John Was raised with his six siblings in Windham Hill. He was taught by his mother, a teacher in a country school in Windham Hill, then finished school at Springhill High. John was very musical and learned to play the piano, accordion and guitar, as well as picking at other instruments, playing by ear. It gave him great entertainment throughout his life, often making him the center of attention at many house parties in his early years. His eclectic taste in music included sappy country tunes, folk songs and fiddle music. John married Lucy Stonehouse on April 5, 1967 in Toronto, before starting their adventurous life in Baker Lake, NWT. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They had two children and he enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren. John was fortunate to have two fulfilling careers; first as a weather observer during which time he travelled and lived in Baker’s lake, Trout Lake, St. John’s, and Sable Island, finally moving to Shelburne where he raised his family. In 1986 he started his second career as a DFO officer, working in the Lockeport office, and then the Shelburne office until his retirement. He had a strong work ethic, and whether at work or any other task, he gave it his all. John was a past member of the Shelburne Lions Club, Shelburne Boy Scout leader, as well as a member of the Whirligig committee, and Shelburne Harbor Yacht Club where he held numerous positions over the years. He enjoyed fixing bicycles for neighborhood kids and motorcycle touring, and was a Formula 1 enthusiast, avid reader, CBC radio fan, beer connoisseur and wine sommelier- although he never found one he didn’t like! He was a nature lover, teaching anyone who would listen about snakes, frogs, spiders, and turtles. John took fashion cues from no one, and one of his signature looks included bright suspenders, his SHYC jacket and one of his many Tilley hats. Due to his color blindness, the pants and shirt didn’t necessarily match, unless Lucy was dressing him up! He could be seen walking his dog Maggie, sometimes enjoying a fine cigar. John is survived by his loving wife, Lucy, Shelburne; his children, Lisa (John), Shelburne; Douglas, Shelburne; his grandchildren, Isaac and Rachel, Shelburne; his siblings, Daniel (Ruth), Campbell River, BC; Dale, Windham Hill, NS; Ted, Abbotsford, BC; Bernadette Forest, Delta, BC; Delma (Doug) Peck, Sparwood, BC; sister-in-law, Diane Brown, Sheet Harbour; nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his parents Hilton and Christena, Windham Hill; brother, Carl, Sheet Harbour. Visitation was held at Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne , Wednesday, July 26 from 7-9 p.m. Family and friends were also invited to a Wake at the Shelburne Harbor Yacht Club to celebrate John’s life on Thursday, July 27 starting at 7:30 p.m. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to Roseway Hospital Auxillary, or a canned donation to Shelburne Pet Projects. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Roseway Hospital for their exceptional care during John’s stay there. He enjoyed talking with each of you and the special treatment shown to him by dancing, singing, or taking the time to listen to his stories meant a lot to him. Special thanks to Dr. Macfarlane for always answering his many questions and listening intently to his newest trivia. Thank you for everything. John always had a smile and time to talk to anyone. He was good natured, and had a passion for learning and knowledge. He read everything and when he learned to use the internet, Google and Youtube became his favorite. He was never negative or spoke ill of anyone and no doubt, one of the reasons he had so many friends. He will be greatly missed by them and most of all, his family.
