Ruth Leard Williams

March 8, 1924-April6, 2017
Passed away peacefully at her home in Barrie, Ontario but her true home was always the Island. Predeceased by her parents, Walter and Hazel Leard, sister Marjorie and brother Alden, she was the first child born at Summerside hospital on March 8, 1924. She told many stories of an idyllic childhood: roasted potatoes from her father's potato farm warming cold winter skates; being taught by her own brother in a one room school house; attending Central Bedeque Baptist Church where her Mother and Brother played the organ and her Father sang in the choir; being picked up by her father in a horse drawn sleigh when she returned home for Christmas. In describing these cherished memories to her children, her story telling skills created a legacy of vivid pictures of what life was like for this Island girl. After the passing of her husband, Gerry Williams, she returned to the Island every summer for 32 years. The Shaw's Hotel in Brackley Beach became a place she would call home for almost 6 weeks each summer. There she created a bond with both the staff and families who returned annually. It was a cherished reunion with uniquely talented, intelligent, adventuresome people with whom she created deep friendships. Her children Rick, Kara and Jeff and their families honour her by returning this summer to the Shaw's hotel and to bury her ashes in her family plot at the Central Bedeque Baptist Church and to commemorate and celebrate this beloved woman and a life well lived.
