(1939-2017)
Passed peacefully away on August 4, 2017 at Victoria Hospice, Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, after a short illness in her seventy-eighth year. Marie was predeceased by her husband James Battersby of Toronto, parents Michael and Mary Duff (Lawlor), sister Joan (John), and brother Douglas. She leaves to mourn brothers Frank (Shannie) and Michael (Kathleen) of St. John's, nephews Frank (John) of San Francisco, Michael of Ottawa, Iain (Robyn) of Chattanooga, and nieces Suzanne (Claude) of Cork, Judy of St. John's, Siobhan (Jim) of Chattanooga, and Stephanie (Chad) of St. John's, as well as her loving grand-nieces and nephews and her wide and cherished circle of friends. Although Marie lived outside of Newfoundland for many years, she never lost her interest in and love for her native province and made frequent visits to family and friends in St. John's throughout her life. She also lived and worked in Geneva, Montreal, Ottawa and most recently Victoria BC, her home and community for the last three decades of her life. In each of these places Marie built lasting friendships which she continued to nurture and delight in during her visits to cities throughout Canada and beyond. With her tremendous sense of the possible and enormous zest for life, Marie lived her life fully and with infectious joy. And it is thus she is remembered and missed. We wish to express our deep gratitude for the kindness and care provided by the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria Hospice. Cremation has taken place. Celebrations of Marie's life will be organized in Victoria and in St. John's. Details of the funeral service in St. John's will be announced at a later date.
