Fernando Hernandez
Age 79, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

It is with heavy hearts and a profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fernando Hernandez. Born in Granada, Spain, he was the son of the late Fernando Hernandez and Ana Diaz. Fernando grew up in Figueras, a cherished place where family still reside, and return. He emigrated twice: first to Manchester, UK, where he met and married Sylvia; and then to Canada, where they eventually settled in Truro, Nova Scotia, with their three children: Paul, Maria and Luisa. Fernando had been an all-round and accomplished athlete, and he embraced his community through sharing his passion and enthusiasm for sport. He had been a long-time player and coach of soccer, and with his blackbelt in Judo, he had coached the local YMCA Judo Club for many years. He maintained his love of table tennis and relished his title of Canadian senior doubles champion later in life. Fernando delighted in his work with the restaurant and catering business, where his love of food and interacting with people from all over the world came together. This was especially true during his time managing the food services at the former Nova Scotia Teachers College. The students kept his spirit young, and a constant stream of banquets offered creative opportunity to help people celebrate the special events in their lives. His happiness was deeply rooted in his steadfast love for his own family and caring friends, among whom his infectious optimism will forever stay. He was immensely proud of his family, especially all his grandchildren: Miguel, Elena, Brianna (Maria & Scott); Andreas, Dominik, Nikolai (Luisa & Gunther); and Elliot (Paul & Kathy). They will deeply miss their Papa. He was their biggest fan in the stands and on the sidelines. He championed their dreams and celebrated their accomplishments in school, always with a festive family gathering. He was so grateful to have his children and grandchildren in his everyday life. He treasured his close relationship with his siblings in Spain: his brother, Juan Miguel, and sister, Antonita. Fernando was a deeply spiritual man and was guided by his strong Catholic faith. He will be dearly missed by his loving partner, Mary, with whom he shared his love of life over the last fourteen years, and by her sons Terry and Stephen, together with their beautiful families.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm in the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street in Dartmouth. Funeral mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 16th, 2017, with a reception to follow, at Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church, 10 Maple Street in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to his family physician Dr. Lee and the healthcare professionals at the QEII for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, those so wishing are encouraged to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Friends and family are invited to share condolences and memories at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
