During the Second World War, Gerry worked as an orderly at the hospital in Yarmouth. It was there that she met William (Bill) Barr. When Bill was transferred to St. Jean, Quebec for further training Gerry went with him and boarded in Montreal where she worked as a stenographer for Federal Aircraft Limited.
Bill worked at several jobs after being discharged from the Air Force following the war and eventually they settled in Mattawa, ON. in 1952. Gerry spent a number of years as a housewife and mother as she and Bill raised their two sons. Then, in 1961, Gerry began working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Mattawa. Following the death of her husband in December 1971, Gerry transferred with the bank to a branch in London, ON. She retired from banking in 1985 and moved to Fredericton, NB to be close to her son Keith and her two grandchildren, Scott and Allyson.
While living in Mattawa, Gerry was involved in various community organizations including the United Church Women. She was a member of the committee that organized a public library in Mattawa and even coached a Pee Wee hockey team with one of her friends for a couple of years.
