With great sadness, the family of Cyril Rendell announce his death which occurred Friday, April 15, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1921, in Mill Creek, Cyril was the son of the late John and Emma (Shinners) Rendell.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Theresa (Gordon) Rendell; his children, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Boudreau (Leslie), Dartmouth, Ruth White (Jack), Groves Point, Edward Rendell (Carol), Groves Point, Sandra Rendell (John Coady), Charlottetown, Daryl Rendell (Linda), New Harris; his grandchildren, Cyril Boudreau, Therese MacKinnon, Jennifer and Christopher White, Jody and Jillian Rendell, Doug and Sarah Jane MacDonald, David, Michelle and Heather Rendell; eight great-grandchildren; also by brothers, Lloyd (Etta), Joseph and David (Judy).
Cyril was predeceased by sisters, Ruth (Urban Smythe), and May (Percy MacGillivary), and brothers, Elric (Marion), Martin Albert and John.
Following his employment as a miner with the Bras d’Or Coal Company, Cyril, with Mary as his partner, established the Rendell Family Farm in Mill Creek. He was subsequently employed as a regional sales representative with Maritime Coop and was instrumental in forming the Maritime Farmers Coop, Keltic Drive, Sydney. Cyril enjoyed assisting other farmers as his work took him from Antigonish to St. John’s, visiting family farms.
While farming was his main passion, moose-hunting was a close second. His interests included playing cards and cooking with and for Mary and family and friends. Cyril also loved to tell stories and had a way of doing so that made you laugh as he recounted their adventures during their 70 years together.
The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff of the Northside General Hospital and all emergency responders for their exemplary professionalism, compassion and care.
In accordance with his wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place with burial to follow at a later date.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome.
Arrangements are under the direction of Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
