Peter Young
Passed on: August 26th, 2017
On Saturday, August 26th 2017, Peter Young PEng, passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family. At 86, he had lived a life filled with love, family, a desire to make a difference and the ability to see the wonderful opportunities in the world. Peter was intelligent, kind, determined, independently minded, and had a deep Christian faith. In spite of many health issues over the years he never lost focus of the beauty of life, nor did he lose his curiosity and thirst for knowledge. For him compassion for everyone, no matter race, creed, orientation or background, was fundamental. After graduating as a Mining Engineer Peter worked in Zambia, and later, for the Iron Ore Company in Schefferville, Labrador City and Sept Iles. Peter was the founding Director of Cooperative Education for Memorial University of Newfoundland, served as President for the Professional Engineers of Newfoundland and Labrador, and was the National President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He was a member of both the Whiteway and Kilwinning Masonic Lodges and also of Chapter and Shrine. He was a singer, a sound recording specialist, played the grand bass recorder, a photographer, a film maker, and an antique fire truck owner - a renaissance man in the truest sense! He was the first COSAD Tanzania Patron/Sponsor, donating recording equipment to establish the Imuka Sound Recording Studio. Peter is survived by Patricia his loving wife of 60 years, four children: Robert (Lynn), Andrew, Jennifer (David Molyneux) and Rosalind (Richard Moskovits); four grandchildren: Samantha, Laura (Rodney), Nick (Laura), Joseph (Allison) and great-grandson Nickson. The family will be greeting friends at Barrett's Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 30th from 7-9 pm, Thursday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The Funeral will be held on Friday, September 1st at 11 am at Gower Street United Church, St John's. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to Daffodil Place (NL Canadian Cancer Society) or The Mazol Shriners Patient Transportation Fund.
