ALBA GEORGIA SADOWY
January 13, 1930 – September 1, 2017
It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Alba Sadowy (née Martyniuk) on September 1, 2017, at Seven Oaks General Hospital, surrounded by her husband and children. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Nadia Martyniuk, and her brother Paul. She is survived by her loving husband Michael (Mike), and her children and grandchildren: Patricia, Michael (Sharon; son Kevin (Carlee) and daughter Heather), Linda Anton (Terry) of Whitehorse, David (Nadia; sons Elliot and Curtis), and John (son Isaac) of Montreal. Alba was born in Poland (now Belarus) and moved to Canada with her family when she was seven years old. She spent her childhood and teen years on the family farm at Red Deer Hill in Saskatchewan. She moved to Prince Albert to go to high school and later to business college. While working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Prince Albert, she met Mike. They were married on April 12, 1952 and recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Soon after their marriage, Mike was transferred to Flin Flon, Manitoba, where they lived for about a year before returning to Prince Albert. Their final move brought them to Winnipeg in 1961, to the house on Coralberry Avenue where Alba lived until her final hospitalization in July of 2017. After her time at the bank as a single woman, she did not work again outside the family home. She was, however, proud of her volunteer work as a canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, and as a classroom volunteer at R.F. Morrison School. Her greatest pride was in following the accomplishments of her husband, her children and their spouses, as well as her grandchildren. She was always keenly interested in people, especially her family, relatives, friends and neighbours, but she also paid attention to world news and politics and had an informed opinion about most current events. Through the years she enjoyed gardening and caring for her many houseplants. She liked reading, especially novels, and watching dramas on television. Her favourite show was Coronation Street which she watched faithfully from its beginning. After moving to Winnipeg she enjoyed our family’s yearly trips back to her parents’ farm to visit with them and her brother’s family, as well as our big camping trip to Vancouver to visit Mike’s sister and family. She looked forward to time at the cottage, especially the one at Grindstone Provincial Park, which she enjoyed for over 30 years. Alba was a caring homemaker, an excellent cook, and a loving communicator, always sharing important news with those who needed to know it. She was a sincere and patient listener, always making time for others’ concerns. We will deeply miss all these aspects of her, and so many more, but we are grateful that she is no longer in pain as she was for so many years. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and other staff members who assisted and cared for Alba during the past few months, especially the nurses and aides at Seven Oaks 5th floor, Units 3 and 4, and 3rd floor, Units 4 and 5, and Dr. Ted St. Godard of the WRHA Palliative Care Program. At Alba’s request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
Her weary hours and days of pain,
Her troubled nights are past;
And in our aching hearts we know
She has found rest at last.
