With heartfelt sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of William Basil Stefura on Monday, April 18, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born April 8, 1923, he was a son of the late Harry and Patricia (Wlaydka) Stefura.
William was a hard working coal miner for 43 years with Devco; working at Phalen Colliery at the time of his retirement. He was a lover of Scottish music and, he and his wife Mary Ellen, enjoyed dancing; and were patrons of many dance halls throughout the local area. They also attended local concerts and enjoyed functions put on by the Gaelic Society.
William is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Ellen (nee MacAdam); daughters, Ellen Marie (Eddie John) MacKenzie, Dominion, Patricia (Timothy) McCarthy, Boston, and Mary (David) Gouthro, Dartmouth; sons, John (Loie), Glace Bay, Michael (Loretta), Dartmouth, Daniel (Gabrielle), Boston, and Basil (Susan), Ajax, Ont.; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Lamey, Sydney; many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Annie and Lena, and brother, Joe.
Visitation will be held tomorrow (Good Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral celebration of his life will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating.
