It is with deep sympathy we announce the passing of Margaret Neila (Northen) McGean, 70, Sydney Mines, NS at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney on September 28, 2017 with her loving family at her side, after a six year illness.
Daughter of the late Peter and Madeleine (MacLean) Northen of Little Narrows, Neila is survived by her dedicated and caring husband, Jack; son, Stephen (Laura) from Edmonton, and the light of her life, her only grandson, Jack. She is also survived by her brothers, Lloyd (Ann), Judique, NS, Monty (Linda), Welland, ON and Chrissy (Grant) MacKay, Fox Creek, AB; sisters-in-law, Estelle Megquier, Bar Harbour, ME, Collen Brown, Sydney Mines, NS, Heather, Halifax, Rachel MacDonald (Dave), Medicine Hat, AB and brothers-in-law, Gerard (Leona), Boularderie, NS and Brian (Rayeanne), Florence, NS; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Neila was predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Kevin (in infancy) and Basil.
An Honorary Member of the Cape Breton Horseman’s Association Hall of Fame, Neila was an avid horse owner, enjoying the evening trips to the barn and of course race days. A graduate of City Hospital, Neila worked as a RN with DEVCO for the majority of her career until her retirement in 2000.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Ritter, Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise McKeough, Palliative Care nurses (Cathy, Michelle and Rachelle), and VON nurses (Donna, Susan and Karen), Brenda Wall, Mary MacDonald for their compassion and care they provided Neila during her illness.
Visitation for Neila McGean will be held Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the JM Jobes Funeral Home 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A funeral mass to celebrate Neila’s life will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. JJ MacDonald officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
