John Stewart ‘Foo’ MacPherson, 85, Windsor, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a graduate of Morrison High School and a well known athlete locally and at Acadia University.
John served in the navy during the Second World War. After graduating from Acadia, John worked as a geologist for three years and spent 32 years in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent in Annapolis and Shelburne counties.
John was predeceased by wife, Sara (MacLeod); parents, John and Gertrude (Bigelow) MacPherson; brother, Joseph and sisters, Lola MacPherson, Maude Vey and Florence Hallett.
He is survived by daughters, Dale MacPherson-Baxter, Toronto, Deborah MacPherson, Richmond, B.C., Louise MacPherson, Halifax; grandson, Sean O’Neil, Richmond, B.C.; sister, Gertrude Drover, Windsor; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Following the private family interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, John’s family and friends are invited to a reception to be held at V.J. McGillivray’s Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at 2:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, a reception celebrating John’s life will be held at Lindsay’s Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Donations may be made in John’s memory to some of his favourite charities, the Arthritis Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Society.
