John Blaise Campbell, 75, of 15 Carroll St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Thomas R. and Mary Ann (Metcalfe) Campbell.
John was a pipe fitter by trade and worked on many construction projects throughout Canada. He was a dedicated executive member of Local 682, Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union. An avid hockey enthusiast, John was active as coach and manager in both minor and junior hockey in Dominion, New Waterford and Glace Bay. In 1981, he was the manager for the New Waterford Jets and brought them to their first Junior A provincial hockey championship.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene (nee Bourgeois); children, Garth (Cindy), Fort Sask. AB, Blair (Bonnie), Port Moody, BC, Lisa, Edmonton, AB, Johnna, Alix, AB, Darrell (Judy), Glace Bay, Keith (Liz), Edmonton, AB and Ross, Regina, SK; grandchildren, John Ross, Kyle, Colin, Kenton, Aaron, Janna, Mackenzie, Kyla, Mitchell and Josh; sister, Jean Coleman. He will be sorely missed by his buddy, Jeris.
He was predeceased by sisters, Bertha, Bridget and Mary.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Curry’s Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be celebrated this coming Friday, August 14, 2009, at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Rev. Leo Boone officiating.
