
Anthony ‘Jack’ Ralph Wrathall

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony ‘Jack’ Wrathall, 90, at his last post, Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay, where he had resided the last two years. Jack passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at Taigh Na Mara.
Born Aug. 15, 1918, in Reserve Mines, N.S., he was the son of the late Anthony and Jane (Ralphs) Wrathall.
Jack was a veteran of the Second World War from 1939 until 1945. He first served in Canada, then overseas landing in Normandy on D-Day where he served with the Armoured Division. After returning from the war, he went back to work in the Glace Bay coal mines, retiring in 1974. He was very active in the Canadian legion and held many offices, including president.
He was a member of St. Anthony’s parish, Glace Bay, and was in the men’s club there for many years. He enjoyed family gatherings, travelling, darts and playing cards.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 53 years, the former Dorothy Livingstone.
He will be sadly missed by sons, Ron (Sharon) and Ralph, both living in Ontario; daughters, Dorothy (Bernie) Kelly, Anna (Reggie) Currie, both of Glace Bay, Lynne and Margaret, Ontario, Emily ‘Mickie’ (James) Buchanan, Sydney, Nancy (Louie) Bresson, Louisdale; brother, Douglas (Joan); sister, Jean Long; sister-in-law, Mary, all of Sydney; cherished grandchildren, Derrick, David and Shaunah Kelly, Michael and Joey Currie, Francine MacIntyre, Debbie Vater, Brenda Peterson, David McQuay, Jamie Scriver, Julie Manske, Jackie and Justin Wrathall, Jeff and Leanne Buchanan, Colin and Kyle Bresson and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by his second wife, Margaret Hunson, brothers, Stephen, Sidney, Henry, Edwin, Irvine and Jimmy, sisters, Mary, Jessie and Isabelle.
Visitation for Jack Wrathall will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12 at St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
