HOBEN, STERLING “STERL” A. - Surrounded by his loving family, Sterling Albert Hoben of Fredericton, N.B. passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Born February 23, 1917, at Swan Creek, he was the son of the late Reuben and Alice (MacDonald) Hoben. Sterl will be forever remembered by his beloved wife Margaret (Thompson) of 56 years, daughters Janice (Bill) Martin of Halifax and Nancy (Claude) Brewer of Fredericton. He will also be fondly remembered by his cherished grandchildren Andrew Martin, Sarah Martin and Alexander Brewer as well as many extended family members and friends. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Sterling was predeceased by his sisters Louise Banks, Elsie Banks and brothers Havelock, Reuben and Roy. Sterling was a WWII veteran. He served with the Canadian Army in the UK and Continental Europe. He was wounded in action in Belgium returning to Canada in 1945 and then employed for 29 years with Base Supply Co., Base Gagetown until his retirement in 1982. Sterl was a faithful member of Smythe Street Cathedral. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff of 3E (DECH) for their excellent care and Dr. Gordon Plummer for his compassion and attentive care over the years.
Visitation will take place at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The memorial service will be held at Smythe Street Cathedral at 2:00 on Sunday, May 1, 2011 with Rev. Verner Drost officiating. Interment in the Rural Cemetery Extension, Woodstock Road, immediately following. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to The Village of Hope or charity of the donor’s choice.
