Passed in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: April 27th, 2011
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Joseph MacDougall Sr., on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Alex Rory and Christina (MacDonald) MacDougall. He was a member of St. Pius X parish in Sydney Mines.
Joe was a coal miner for 37 years, working at the Princess Colliery and the Prince Mine. He retired in 1991. Joe was a handyman and loved to fix vehicles. He had such patience, especially with his grandchildren. He was a practical joker and welcomed everyone he met with a smile and a finger shake.
Joe is survived by his three sons; Joey and Lorne (Lila), both of Sydney Mines, Kevin (Stewart), Ontario, and his daughter, Lisa (Stephen) Doucette, Ingonish Beach. He was a very special grandfather to six grandchildren, whom he adored, Holly (Rod) Parr, New Glasgow, Grant (Danielle) Donovan, Dartmouth, Lachlan Doucette, Ingonish Beach, Lorne Jr. (Danielle) MacDougall, Dartmouth, Lloyd (Holly) MacDougall, Sydney Mines, Jennifer MacDougall, Sydney Mines. He also had 13 great-grandchildren, Marissa (Marcus), Farrah, Lauren, Yvonne, Grace, Sophie, Sean, Gabrielle, Isaiah, Jordan, Jaden, Felicity and Dominic. Joe is also survived by his sister Jenny (Gordon Webb), Arkansas; brother, Kenny, Sydney Mines; many nieces and nephews and his special kitty, ‘Mocha’.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lillian Grace (Gale); daughter, Genevieve; brothers, Alec, Donald, Dan, Roddie; nephew, Frankie; sisters, Sarah O’Quinn, Elizabeth Jessome, Annie Mae Peck and Maggie Hall.
The family wishes to thank his son, Joey, who took great care of ‘Da’, and devoted his life to being with him after ‘Ma’s’ passing. Recently, “Grampy” lived with his granddaughter, Holly and her family in New Glasgow. Joey and her family made great sacrifices to make sure he had the best care possible. We are forever grateful. We would also like to thank special friends Hilda, Brian and Patti for being there for ‘Da’.
Visitation for Joe MacDougall will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, May 1, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care floor of the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.
