Sadie (MacDonald) Unsworth, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Little Pond, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Sarah (MacLean) MacDonald. Sadie was the last of her immediate family.
Sadie was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. Her joy was her family. Sadie liked nothing better than to be surrounded by her family both in Florence and at the family cottage in Ross Ferry.
Sadie went to Normal College and became a teacher and also continued her studies at Xavier Junior College where she completed her teaching education. She taught in Millcreek, Alder Point, Little Pond, and taught several years in Florence where she retired from her teaching career.
Sadie was active in her community. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, the United Church Women, the Board of Stewarts and often took part in church services as a reader and a lay preacher. Sadie served along with her husband for many years as a cub leader.
Sadie liked to quilt and was an active member of the Wilson United Quilters. She loved to read and was always a strong advocate for education. Sadie was a staunch defender of her family and always had an encouraging word for whoever needed it the most. She also enjoyed boating, badminton, skating and snow shoeing and enjoyed a good game of bridge.
Sadie is survived by her children, David (Linda), St. Ann’s, George ( Sharon), Sydney River, Kathryn (Don) MacVicar, Halifax, Sally (Doug) White, Ross Ferry, William (Marcy), Sydney River, and John ( Kelly), Little Pond. Fifteen grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also mourn her passing.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George Arthur Unsworth and her brothers, William Archie and Donald MacDonald and Daniel MacLean and sisters, Christene Robertson and Catherine Snow.
Cremation has taken place. Sadie’s family will receive visitors in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Thursday, Aug. 13 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence, with Rev. Robert Latimer and Norma Mills, DLM officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sadie may be made to Wilson United Church, Florence, or Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice.
