Margaret Mary (Burns) Whitty, 73, of Baddeck and formerly of Antigonish, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, after a long battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Sanford and Mary (Barrington) Burns.
She was a member of St. Michael’s parish, Baddeck, and former member of St. Ninian’s parish, Antigonish.
She founded Mary Pat Realties, Antigonish, which she operated until her illness in 1994. She was a past president of the Highland Real Estate Association.
During her years in Antigonish she served her community on a number of boards and was involved in the early years of Antigonish Food Bank committee.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Walter Whitty; four daughters, Ann Marie, (Carl) Morris, St. Andrew’s, Cathy (Everett) Lamey, New Victoria, Elizabeth (Joey) Guthro, Antigonish, Mary (Roddie) MacIntosh, Springfield; two sons, Walter Whitty (Lisa), Port Hawkesbury, Steven Whitty, Winnipeg. She was the grandmother to 14 grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Elsie (Gordon) Heading, Sydney, Hilda Burns, Halifax, Dianne (Jacques) Senechal, Halifax, Theresa (Steve) Whelan, Edmonton; brothers, John (Arlene), Calgary, Colin (Lynne), Calgary, Harry, Westmount. Also survived by special uncle, Harry Barrington, New Waterford.
She was predeceased by brother, Sanford Jr.
Her remains will rest at MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck, Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The remains will be transferred to C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish, with visitation Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from St. Ninian’s Cathedral with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.  
Memorial donations may be made to Victoria County Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice.
