Donald Murray Thompson

The family of Donald Murray Thompson is saddened to announce his death at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Friday, February 25, 2011. Don’s children and friends were with him at the time of his passing. His death is also grieved by his friend Ann Cauty.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Elleda Thompson and his brothers Lloyd, Stewart and Norman of Saint John, New Brunswick.
He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy E. Thompson (Steele) and the father of Jane, John (Winnifred) and Neil (Kathy). He was the grandfather of Tracey (Scott), the late Kimberley, Scott (Susan) and Sarah (Chris) and great-grandfather to Bryce, Evan and Elissa.
Don was devoted to his family and to his country. He was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on August 19, 1922. Don joined the militia in 1935 and went overseas. He was wounded shortly after landing on D Day. Following the war he remained active in the militia, becoming the Honorary Colonel of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa.
Don Thompson’s work with veterans began in 1946 when he joined the Royal Canadian Legion in New Brunswick. In 1949 he moved to Ottawa and subsequently became Dominion Secretary of the Royal Canadian Legion. In this capacity, he was instrumental in improving veterans’ legislation. In 1971 Don was appointed Chairman of the War Veterans Allowance Board. Under his leadership, the board broke new ground in its approach to veterans and their rights. During this time the board was the first Department of Veterans Affairs element to move from Ottawa to Charlottetown. In 1987 he became Special Advisor to the Minister and to the Deputy Minister
of Veterans Affairs.
Don retired in 1989 but continued to work relentlessly for the rights of veterans and their families. His more than 60 years of service bridged all aspects of veterans’ advocacy. In retirement, he also championed seniors’ issues. His life was one of unselfish service to his fellow Canadians.
The family is grateful to the staff of Units 1 and 3 of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for their care and support.
