Mrytle Chelew
CHELEW: Myrtle Marion was the 3rd of 6 children born in Canada to Charles and Clara Andrews (Porter). Charles immigrated from London, England in 1906 and Clara followed in 1907 arriving in Toronto. They were married in 1908 and remained in the Toronto/Hamilton area. In 1909 they settled on their homestead northwest of Hazlet where Myrtle was born April 24, 1914. Myrtle is survived by son John (Jackie) Chelew of Swift Current. Step Grandchildren Chris Kehler (Melissa Boire) and Carri Kehler (Calvin Dahl) and Step Great Grandson Aidan Kehler. Myrtle is survived by sister in laws Pat Andrews of Swift Current, Shirley Philp of Waldeck, Joan (Ken) Diemert of Kindersely and Jean (Bob) Stewardson of Camrose. Myrtle was predeceased by father Charles in 1942, mother Clara in 1960, Ross in 2000. She is also predeceased by brothers John in 1928, Albert in 1982; sisters Addie in 1986, Winnie in 2003, Doris Best in 2005. Sister in law Velma Philp in 2004; brothers in law Jim Philp in 1990, Alan Philp in 2008, Gordon Best in 2009. Also predeceased by nephews Brock Diemert in 1976 and Mark Andrews in 2008; niece Marnie Andrews in 2002. Myrtle is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Myrtle attended school at Pittville. Following school she worked for various neighbors cooking and cleaning, then moved to BC, Calgary and then to Hamilton. In the fall of 1942 Myrtle began working for WW Cooper's Store. She continued to work after Cooper's became the Pioneer Co-op; working in the ladies and children's wear, then working part time until 1984. Ross and Myrtle were married June 9, 1956 at St. Stephen's. 1958 was a busy year, John was born on her birthday and they built a house in SC. In 1960 they purchased a farm down the road from the homestead and spent many days visiting with Albert and Pat and Winnie. She helped haul grain, but preferred to drive the combine as she hated backing up to the auger. Harvest and butchering chickens were favorite times of the year. Her many hobbies included gardening, entering flowers and vegetables in the fair, knitting afghans, reading and many holidays. Her baking was shared with all. Favorites were butter tarts, raisin cake, date loaf and shortbread cookies. In 1965 Ross and Myrtle joined the Waldeck Square Dance Club. They danced 3 and 4 nights a week, and traveled to many communities. Myrtle was a member of the ACW, helping with fall suppers, teas and all occasions. She took Ross's passing hard, but refused to move out of their home, until breaking her leg in the fall of 2005 and became a permanent resident at the Palliser in January 2006 and resided there until her passing. Myrtle enjoyed the activities and entertainment she shared with her Palliser family. The Funeral Service was held Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Stephen The Martyr Anglican Church with Reverend Duncan and Beverley Mclean officiating. Pallbearers were Kim Andrews, Todd Andrews, Dale Alliban, Stephen Philp, Blair Philp and Lonnie Stewardson. The eulogy was read by Karla Alliban and Todd Andrews. Ushers were Rob Nurse and Darwin Wilms. Organist for the service was Gloria Robinson. The interment service took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK.
