Mr. Roy Appleton, 84, of Glace Bay passed away Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Stanley and Mary Margaret (Nash) Appleton.
He was a self-employed plumber for many years and then up until his retirement he was employed with Cape Breton Development Corp (Devco). He was a member of the Glace Bay Fire Department, was an avid sportsman who played rugby with Caledonia and he was a marathon runner who was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame. He also loved hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy in life was his wife and family which included grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Norma (MacLeod) Appleton; his only daughter, Blanche (Wilfred) White, Glace Bay; his sons, Roy Jr. (Denise), Brampton, Ont., Allan (Rhonda), Sydney, and Bernie (Melanie Crane), Glace Bay. He is also survived by sisters, Bernice (Bill) Finnigan, Ontario, Audley Nearing (the late Lawrence); brother, Bill (Ricky), Sydney. Also left behind are grandsons, Jeffery Roy and David Robert White, Tommy Burchell; granddaughters, Katie Rose, Katlynn, Kristin, Kaitlyn, Makenna; five great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Dot and Shirley.
He was predeceased by brothers, Arnold, Bernie, Tom, sisters, Annie, Dorothy, Edna, Shirley, Joyce, son, Garry, two sons, James and David Wayne in infancy and daughter, Ramona.
By request there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Salvation Army Citadel with Capt. Kristian Simms officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Reception to follow in Salvation Army Hall.
