Douglas Walter  King

King, Douglas Walter, 91, of Halifax and formerly of Earltown, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building QE ll, Halifax. Born May 23, 1919 to Leverette and Caroline (Thompson) King of Oxford. He was predeceased by his brothers, Arthur, Vancouver, BC; George, Oakville, ON; sister, Margaret MacKenzie, Truro. He is survived by his nephew, Robert MacKenzie, Victoria, BC; nieces, Joan King, Marysville, ON; Shirley King, Del Mar, California. Doug, a craftsman, was a long-time resident of Truro and the Tatamagouche area having worked as a mason. He joined his brother George to build their mother a finely crafted home in Truro after their service terms in WW ll. Doug a veteran of the 2nd World War, served as a marksman in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders of the Canadian Army for four years during WW ll. As a sharpshooter he endured very heavy combat duty and solitary foot patrol. He spent his last years living at Camp Hill in Halifax where he received very loving and dignified care by the staff and volunteers on 3-West. Doug will be fondly remembered for his dedicated pursuit of the simple life. A private interment will take place at the Robie Street Cemetery in Truro. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro.
