Stephen, Sydney Jackson- It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Sydney Stephen of the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou formerly of Wellington Street announces his passing on Saturday May 14th 2011 at the Oddfellows home in Pictou at the age of 82.
Syd was born April 21st 1929 in Scotland and was the son of the late John and Mabel (Finlay) Stephen.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty(MacLean) of 47 years; his children, Sheri Blair (Robert) Lyons Brook; Lori Fraser (Shawn), Pictou; his grandchildren: Chanelle, Brody, Rayna and Kylie Blair, Madison and Jaden Fraser; brother in-law Jerry MacLean (Beth), Truro; sister in-law Beverly MacLean, Ontario; along with nieces and nephews and several nieces in Scotland.
Syd came to Canada in 1952 after serving with the 4th Royal Tank Regiment in “Shandur Egypt” with the British army.
Syd worked over 50 years in the food industry starting with Dominion stores in Ontario and later with Sobeys in Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Ontario and Nova Scotia for 37 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Masons of Scotland.
His retirement years were enjoyed travelling, listening to Scottish music especially the International Tatoo in Halifax and attending the Highland Games and Bagpipe parades along with many enjoyable occasions with his family.
A private service will be held at MacQuarries Funeral Home in Stellarton on Thursday May 19th 2011, Burial will take place in Abercrombie Cemetery. Family Flowers only. Donations would be greatly appreciated to the Alzheimers Society of Nova Scotia.
A very special thank you to all the staff at the Odd Fellows home in Pictou where Syd was a resident for over 2 years. The care and compassion that was provided to him and his family was of exceptional quality. Our sincere thanks, Syd’s family.
