TRENTON and STELLARTON - Annie Bell McKay, 97 of Trenton and Stellarton, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at the Valley View Villa, Riverton.
Born in Trenton, August 16th, 1912, she was the daughter of William Douglas Johnston and Emma Ann (Mercer).
She was educated in Trenton and New Glasgow and graduated from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in 1934. Between private duty nursing and the Aberdeen Hospital, Annie worked in her nursing profession for more then 30 years. She was well respected by her co-workers. The family often received compliments from her former patients for the special treatment given by their mom. From the time she was in training she was always “the nurse†in her neighbourhood. She spent many happy years at her camp in Lochaber and loved fishing and family gatherings.
Annie was a compulsive learner and loved to keep up to-date on her medical profession. She not only played bridge but studied the game. At the age of 85 she took her first computer course. Up to a week ago she was still having her competitive game of crib with her son.
She is survived by her son, Bill McKay, (Stellarton); Joy (John) MacKenzie, Abercrombie; Judy (Ken) Sims, Antigonish. She was “Nan†to her nine grandchildren who loved and cherished her: Judith (Guardian Angel), Jacqueline, Janice, Jocelyn, Josephine, Candace, Tony, Heather, and Trish. She was “Nana K†to her 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Annie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, William Bernard McKay; granddaughter, Judith; brothers: Frank, George, Charles and Alex; sister, Rita (Henry) Fallon.
Extra special thanks goes to all the staff at the Valley View Villa for their caring manners during Annie’s three year stay. Their tender care was very helpful to us this last week.
Cremation has taken place.
The family will receive visitors Friday, August 21st from 7-9 p.m. at H.C. Mac Quarries Funeral Home, Stellarton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Stellarton with Fr. Bill Rankin officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
