J. Stuart Pipe
It is with the deepest sadness that the family of J. Stuart Pipe announces his passing on May 15, 2011. The son of Geraldine and Medley Pipe, Stuart was a proud life long resident of Amherst, NS.
After graduating from the University of New Brunswick in 1964, he accepted a position in the head office of the Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal. In 1968, after working in the investment, inspection, and systems branches in both Montreal and Ottawa, Stu returned home to Amherst as Vice President of Dunlap Brothers & Company Limited. In 1974, he assumed the duties as President of the firm.
Stu was always an active member of the business community: as board member of the Board of Trade, the Merchants Association, and a Director of the Amherst United Way. In 1978, he was elected to the Amherst & Area Industrial Commission serving as its Chairman in 1981.
Stu was a member of the Amherst YMCA (where he was to met his true love) and later served on the board. He took an active role in the successful Capital Campaign to raise funds for the new facility.
Stu joined the Amherst Rotary Club in 1983 serving on many committees and as a member of the Board of Directors. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship for his service. He Co-Chaired the Rotary District Convention, which was the largest in the history of the district.
He was a founding member of the Marquis of Lorne sailing club.
Stu served on the Parish Council of Christ Church and was a Warden for 2 years.
Stu was a founding board member of the Cumberland Healthcare Foundation and served as vice chairman during his tenure with that board. He served on various committees as well as vice chair of the Above And Beyond Campaign and later as the chair.
In 1992, Stu moved to the shore to enjoy country living by the ocean. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren for tractor rides, landscaping, visiting with family and friends, playing bridge with the boys, hunting with his German Shorthair Pointer, spending carefree days driving his motorcycle around the beautiful Nova Scotia coastlines and he loved reading in the shade of the southern pine tree in Bonita Springs.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Cathy, daughter Linda, son Steven and sister Ellen Pearson. Grandchildren Nicholas, Diana, Madison, and Austin.
Service will be held Saturday May 21, 2011 at 11am at Christ Church, followed by a reception in the church hall. No flowers by request of the family. Stu’s favourite charities were the Amherst Rotary Club, Christ Church, and Cumberland Healthcare Foundation.
