SEAMAN, Frederick Lloyd “Fred” – 77, Valley Station, Colchester County, passed away on Monday afternoon, May 16, 2011, at Colchester Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born July 4, 1933, in Truro, he was a son of the late John Lemuel and Esther Eleanor (Archibald) Seaman. Fred was a retired locomotive engineer following 39 years of service with Canadian National Railway and VIA Rail. He loved the railroad. His career with the railroad was marked with making many loyal and life-long friends and he was always grateful for the close friendships maintained with many of these until his death. Fred knew the value of a smile, a kind word, a listening ear and many acts of caring and concern. Caring, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience were all hallmarks of his life. He had an infectious sense of humour and was always keen to support his community of Valley. It was important for him “to do unto others” and to be a good neighbour to all. Fred had an abiding love of music and the world around him. It was not unusual for him to spontaneously sit at the piano and sing for family and friends. He was the “life of the party”. For many years, he also maintained a small farm and loved animals. Always interested in sports, he enjoyed hockey, baseball and horse racing. He rarely missed a Truro Bearcats hockey game. He was a member of Truro Horsemen’s Club and was recently honoured with a life membership. He was also a proud affiliate member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. Along with his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Doreen (MacDonald); brother, John B. “Jack” Seaman; nephew, John L. Seaman. Fred is survived by his sister, Edith (Robert) Ripley, Valley Station; sister-in-law, Lucy Seaman, Valley Station; nephew, Robert Ripley, Halifax; nieces, Margaret (John) MacIntyre, Truro; Sylvia (Kevin) Scott, Debert. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Fred’s family will receive friends from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2011.
