Following a courageous battle with cancer, Lawrence passed away on May 19,2011 in the comforting presence of his family and friends. Death occurred at the Palliative Care Center in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Lawrence is predeceased by his wife Donna Whalen; his parents Tom and Jessie (nee) Cameron MacPherson; sister, Jean (died at birth) and his brother Donald.
Lawrence is survived by his devoted son Edward married to Tracey Bates residing in Ottawa and cherished daughter Lauren of Lingan (Adam Sharpe, Bateston).
The deceased is one of 13 children who include devoted sisters, Florence Reganti (James Reganti, deceased), Niagara Falls, Joan Corbett (Frank Corbett), Lingan and loyal brothers Angus (Elizabeth), California, Hugh (Evelyn), Gardiner Mines, Anselm (Brenda), Alexander (Colena), Gregory (Donna), Leonard, all of Lingan; and sister-in-law Della of River Ryan, Rev. Damian MacPherson, SA, Franciscan Friar of the Atonement (Graymoor) who is Director for Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs for the Archdiocese of Toronto and Rev. Albert MacPherson, OSA, founder of the Augustinian Healing Ministries stationed in Lawrence, Mass.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and United States.
Lawrence was a lifetime native of New Waterford/Lingan and thus a well known citizen of the town and surrounding area. He was an accomplished and frequently sought after carpenter as a forty plus year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1588, a coveted trade handed onto him by his father. He lived his Catholic Faith with dedication and handed the same onto his children. He was an avid sports-minded individual whose day was best celebrated when the Montreal Canadians experienced victory on the ice. The deceased leaves behind a large community of friends, relatives and family who mourn his loss and he will forever be a part of their memory.
Visiting hours will take place on Sunday, May 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. Mass of Resurrection will take place on Monday, May 23, at 1p.m. in St. Leonard's Parish, New Waterford. Burial will follow immediately in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery. Luncheon to follow at Saint Leonard's Parish Centre on Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care, Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of one's choice.
