Alta Vaughan

Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: Aurora, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: July 4th, 2018

With heartfelt sadness, the family of Alta Margaret Vaughan, announces her passing on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at the age of 92. Alta was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on January 9, 1926 and was the oldest child of Bert and Margaret (MacDougall) Cossitt in a family of 9 children.

Alta grew up on her family's homestead at 190 Herbert Street in Sydney. She was a soloist in the church choir, a self taught organist and the ultimate lover of music, hymns in particular. Alta met George Vaughan from Halifax at a local dance and soon realized they shared a January 9th birthday. In 1949 Alta married George and moved to Toronto. Alta and George settled in a small war time bungalow. It was 7 years before Owen came along and another 8 years before Margaret arrived.

Alta worked many jobs over the years but the two she seemed to enjoy the most was the time she spent working with mentally handicapped children as a teachers assistant, and her position as chef at Versa Foods in downtown Toronto. She was famous for her bacon twists and cinnamon buns which we are still trying to replicate. No one could make them quite like Alta.

Alta lived at the little home on Ennerdale Road in Toronto for 60 years.

Alta spent her later years being a doting Grandmother to Ryan and John. She so enjoyed the time she spent with them. This world has never seen a more devoted Grandmother.

Alta is survived by son, Owen Vaughan (Angelica and her son Daniel and wife Priscila); daughter, Margaret Reid (Randy) and grandsons Ryan and John; brother, Gus (Evelyn) sisters, Sarah MacLean, Virgina Chezenko, Marina Anderson, Louise MacLennan and Myrtle Mattheson (Allan).

Alta was predeceased by her husband George, her brothers George and Eoin, and brothers-in-law, Kenneth MacLean, Donnie Anderson, Fred Chezenko and Ward MacLennan.

We would like to personally thank all the staff at Chartwell Aurora for their comfort, quality of care and compassion during Alta's 5 year stay. This was Alta's home, where she was surrounded by loving, dedicated and caring individuals everyday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to your local Humane Society. Over the years, Alta and her furry companions; Lulu, Snookie, Nipper, Lauder and Sparkle, where passionate supporters of this fine organization.

God Bless
