Maureen left us on June 23, 2018 after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Her family is left devastated, but grateful for the many people who reached out and supported Maureen and her family during her final months. Special thanks to the nurses and physicians at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially Linda and Jill. A particular note of thanks to the VON nurses who attended Maureen daily, several of whom become good friends and mourn her loss with us, including Ann, Lois and Karen. To the many people who called, messaged and visited Maureen during her illness, please know that your messages brought her comfort and were such a boost at times she needed one. It was only in reading the notes sent by her wonderful friends, colleagues and in a few cases, people she’d met only once, that she realized what a positive impact she had on so many people and communities. To those who brought food, sent flowers, sent messages of condolence and mass cards, and made donations to the Maureen Carroll Memorial Leadership Award at CBU or Palliative Care, we say thank you. A heartfelt thank you to Jeff Ward who performed a traditional Mi’kmaq sendoff for Maureen, Rodney MacDonald and Colin MacDonald for the beautiful music, and the staff of TW Curry’s Parkview Funeral Home.
