Passed in: Ottawa, Alberta, Canada
Passed on: July 18th, 2018

George Samuel Fiander, in his 79th year, passed peacefully away surrounded by his wife, son and friend Sylvia on Wednesday, July 18th, 2018 after complications due to two strokes while visiting family in Ottawa. Since May, 2018, he had been cared for by the kind and generous doctors, nursing staff and therapists at Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. George, Phyllis and the family are forever grateful. He was the beloved husband to Phyllis for 56 years and loving father to Dawn (Daniel) of Calgary, Jacqueline (Demetrio) of Ottawa, Wendy (Steve) of Kitchener and Trevor (Julie) of Ottawa. The joys of his life were his grandchildren, Kylie, Evan, Patrick, Leah, Jack and Sam. Reputed for his gregarious presence and sense of humour, he had numerous close friendships he cultivated during his career in the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Service, his involvement in the Anglican Church of St. Mark’s and his tireless volunteer contributions to the St. John’s Mazol Shrine and Masonic Clubs. He regarded his brethren as family.

George was born on October 25th, 1939 in English Harbour West in Newfoundland. He resided the majority of his life in St. John’s. He loved Newfoundland. His close family includes his sister Joan Cook and his dear nieces Diane Druken (Doug) and Jean Cook (Neil).

There aren't sufficient words to extend particular thanks to Dr Badenduck, Nurse Grace and physical therapist Nadia of Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario.

George, you will be missed, you lit up a room and you made many of us feel like we belonged and we mattered.

Visitation will be held on July 26th, 27th and the morning of July 28th at Barrett's Funeral home on Hamilton Avenue. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 28th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark's Anglican Church on Torbay Road, St. John's.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shriner's transportation fund or Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital.
