Madeleine Northen, 90, Little Narrows, passed away peacefully with family by her side, Saturday, May 21, 2011, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Washabuck, she was a daughter of the late Neil P.S. and Christina (MacLean) MacLean.
She graduated from Normal College in Truro in 1940. Madeleine taught at various schools, including Washabuck, Little Narrows and Eskasoni. She was a member of Sacred Heart Mission, MacKinnon’s Harbour, and then St. Columba parish, Iona. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.
Surviving are her children, Lloyd (Ann), Judique, Neila (Jack) McGean, Sydney Mines, Chrissie (Grant) MacKay, Fox Creek, Alta., and Monty (Linda), Welland, Ont.; grandchildren, Liz (Blaise) Cameron, Port Hawkesbury, N.S., Cindy (John) Fraser, Merigomish, N.S., Stephen (Laura) McGean, Edmonton, Alta., Joe (Jody) MacKay, Sherwood Park, Alta., Robert (Dawn) MacKay, Fox Creek, Alta., Lloyd (Angela) MacKay, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Lisa (Brian) Morawiecki, Guelph, Ont., Peter (Denise) Northen, Sydney Mines, N.S., Jenna Northen, Sydney, N.S., Mason Northen, Welland, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Jessica Cameron, Cory, Bailey and Owen Fraser, Taylor and Dylan MacKay, Faith, Zarah, Hadlee MacKay and Julia and Sebastian MacKay. She is also survived by her sister, Lily (Mary Ann Elizabeth) MacIvor, Sydney.
She was predeceased in 1984 by husband of 42 years, Peter Joseph Northen, sister, Mary in infancy, brother, Joseph in infancy, and John Benedict, stepbrothers, Francis Alex, Peter, John J., Michael A., James A., Matthias and Neil S., and great-grandson, Tristan William Fraser in infancy.
Resting in St. Columba Parish Centre, Iona, Tuesday, 2-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be offered Wednesday at 2 p.m. from St. Columba Church, Iona, with Rev. Paul Abbass presiding; burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, MacKinnon’s Harbour.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund or charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
