Ernst Guenter “Ernie” Franck

86, of Dartmouth, passed away at the Dartmouth General Hospital on May 19, 2011. Ernie was born in Berlin, Germany on March 5, 1925. He served in the German Navy during World War II and was later transferred to the Russian front where he was taken prisoner in 1945, remaining for 4 years in a POW camp. After his return, he studied Economics at the University of Hamburg. Upon graduation, he worked for 2 years in Germany, before starting a job in St. John's, Newfoundland. Ernie joined Imperial Oil in 1957 and worked for the company as a Market Analyst for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ingrid; three sons, Philip of Vancouver, Steven and Glenn (Kathy); and Grandchildren, Elke and Eric. Ernie was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. He had many hobbies, starting with ballroom dancing in his younger years, duplicate bridge, sailing, painting and drawing, gardening, reading, photography and many more. He was active in many organizations, including Corte Dance Club of Halifax, Canadian Diabetes Association, Shearwater Yacht Club, Dartmouth Minor Soccer and various Bridge Clubs. Ernie enjoyed his life to the fullest and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. A private burial will take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10 a.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, with a reception to follow in the funeral home reception centre.
