The family of Laura MacKenzie (nee MacDonald) is saddened to announce the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother at the amazing age of 100 years on Friday, May 20, 2011 at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Laura is survived by sons, Rev. Renford (Norma), Neil (Joan), both of New Waterford and Donald (Ann), Head of Chezzetcook, Halifax Co., N.S.; six grandchildren, Rev. Bruce MacKenzie (Shana), Ottawa, Lisa MacDougall (Bert), Sydney, Mark MacKenzie, B.C, Karen MacKenzie (Erick Gingras), Quebec, Sheryl Paddock (Dave), Lower Sackville, Glen MacKenzie (Sandra), Bedford; fourteen great grandchildren (Brett, Tiffany, Audrey, Allison, Douglas, Sandy, Tylor, Lindsay, Jeremy, Nolan, Jacolbi, Rowan, Lauren and Daniel) and four great great grand children (Dawson, Isaac, Pascal and Ethan).
Laura was born in Chignecto, Nova Scotia and moved to Scotchtown with her husband to raise their three boys. After Grant’s passing, she resided with son, Neil and daughter-in-law Joan for almost thirty years and was a resident of The Cove Guest Home in Sydney since 2009.
She was known for her quick wit right until the very end. She was a quilter, knitter and avid reader. An extraordinary woman
who bought a treadmill at 86 and got her first library card at age 90. She was always a lady; thoughtful, caring and an inspiration to many. She was the oldest member of Calvin United Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by parents Renford & Eva (Burns) MacDonald, thirteen brothers and sisters, husband John Grant MacKenzie and infant grandson, Renford and granddaughter, Noreen.
Visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford today (Tuesday), May 24, 2011 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The funeral service will take place at Calvin United Church, New Waterford at 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. All are invited to join the family for a reception in Calvin Hall. Laura will be taken to Calvin Church at noontime on Wednesday.
