DOUCETTE, Capt. John A. “Big John” – age 76, Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 26, 2018 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born April 26, 1942 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Andrew and Thérèse (Saulnier) Doucette. John was a scallop fisherman and captain of his fishing vessel, Mark & Jonathan. He also worked in the Irish Moss industry and picked apples in the United States and Canada. He enjoyed hunting, playing pool and camping, having traveled from one end of Canada to the other with his wife in their travel trailer. John was also a big fan of Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. He is survived by his children, Carmen (Ron) Thibeau and Shawn (Anne) Doucette, both of Wedgeport, as well as by grandsons, Jon and Mark. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rosella A. (Cottreau) Doucette and by a sister, Georgine Doucette. Visitation took place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Thursday with prayers at 8 p.m. at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral Mass was held on Friday, August 31 at 2 p.m. from Saint Michael’s Church, Wedgeport, Father Albéni d’Entremont officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. A reception followed at the Wedgeport Sport Tuna Fishing Museum, all were invited. Donations in memory of John may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or to Saint Michael’s Parish Cemetery Fund. The family would like to thank the Nurses and Continuing Care Assistants on the fourth floor of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassion.
