George Michael Ferns, 71, Dartmouth, after a courageous battle with cancer, passed away at home May 25, 2011, in peace and comfort surrounded by his loving family, and began his everlasting reward.
Mike was born in Hamilton, Ont., to the late Joseph Patrick and Agnes (Robinson) Ferns.
Upon completion of his education, Mike joined the Royal Canadian Navy, during which time he met and married his lifetime companion, Stella (McGee) Ferns.
Mike’s professional career was one of great variety; RCN for eight years; safety foreman at the heavy water plant, Port Hawkesbury; safety instructor for the oil rigs. Moving to Dartmouth in 1986, he then worked as safety inspector for the Department of Labour until his retirement.
Mike was devoted to his family and friends. His interest in others was evident in his volunteer community work. Mike served as cub master, refereed Strait Minor Football, he was a first aid instructor for many years, and he sat on the board of the Port Hawkesbury Housing Commission.
Mike more recently was honoured by the Royal Canadian Legion for his 40 years of community service and received a lifetime honorary member of the Knights Of Columbus.
Mike is survived by and will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Stella (McGee) Ferns; sons, Michael (Giselle) Ferns and their children, Jenna and Jamie, all of Port Hawkesbury; Christopher, Dartmouth; daughter, Coleen (David) Gillis and their children, Jake and Jeri-Ellen, all of Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews; sister, Josephine (Ron) Eady; Susan (Joe) Green, all of Ontario.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Catherine Fisher.
The family would like to thank Dr. Peter MacAulay, VON, Always Home Care and Palliative Care for their kindness and compassion during Mike’s illness.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cole Harbour Funeral Home. No visitation by request. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m., Saturday in Blessed Pope John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth. Reception to follow in church hall.
