NEW GLASGOW – Martha Kathleen MacDonald, 78, of New Glasgow. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a very loving wife, mother and grandmother, Martha MacDonald, on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family.
Born in Antigonish (Port Hilford), NS, she was a daughter of Havelock and Althea (Wiggins) Reid.
She was a very active lady, a full time volunteer, always with a huge smile, a fantastic attitude and a fervor for life, with a huge heart, always with compassion for everyone around her. She loved to travel and spend time with her many friends, and especially loved to be with her grandchildren, who always made her smile. As an avid volunteer she spent 20 years with the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the Girl Guides of Canada, Genealogy research with PARL, Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross, MS, etc. She was also the recipient of the Excellence of Service Award for 2001 and three Certificates of Appreciation from the N.S. Volunteers Assoc. Before her retirement, she worked with the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library and the Health Sciences Center Medical Library in St. John’s, NL.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, George C. MacDonald; son, Michael; daughter, Caroline Power; son-in-law, Peter Power; former daughter-in-law, Carol Ann MacLeod; grandchildren: Matthew MacDonald, Emily MacDonald, Lauren Power, Katie Power; sisters, Isabelle (Harold Rector), Howie Center, NS; Helen (Garth MacDonald), Sherbrooke, NS; brother-in-law, Robert (Denyse) MacDonald; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Havelock and Althea Reid; sisters: Kaye MacKenzie (Ira); Margaret Furlong (Frank); Mary Wamback (Fraser); twin brothers at birth and many very close family members and close friends.
The family would especially like to thank the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital, the many nurses and student nurses of ICU and Two North, a special thanks to Nurse Chandra for her final two days of compassion, and especially Dr. Jala for his dedication, compassion and care, always, Dr. Farrell for his compassion on her final day, and Dr. Beed and staff at the V.G. Hospital, all of you for allowing us to have the extra two months to spend with her. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 27, at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m. in Trinity United Church with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook officiating.
Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary or a charity of choice.
