Wilford Murray Alexander
ALEXANDER, Wilford Murray – At the age of 81 of Welshpool, Campobello Island, passed away in Charlotte County Hospital on Wednesday, May 25, after a lengthily illness. He was the son of the late Wilford and Minnie (Cline) Alexander. Murray graduated from Campobello Island Consolidated School and then took an Art Course in Saint John. Murray had a great love of nature and was a very gentle person. He enjoyed his Island home and all the beautiful scenery, flora and fauna, and creatures large and small interested him. At one time, his pet was a little white goat. Murray captured much of the beauty around him in his paintings, which have been on display at the Campobello Library. Many of his paintings included a variety of shells. He enjoyed traveling and working in many locations across Canada, settling for seven years on the West Coast, where he worked as a gardener at several estates. He enjoyed living in Vancouver and the scenery and the islands off the coast. Eventually he returned to Campobello, where he became very interested in the history of the Island. Murray delighted in showing visitors around the Island, he knew so well. He knew all the interesting places to visit, from the first spring beauties to the beautiful fall foliage. He looked forward to picnics on the beach with family each summer. His interest in ancestry brought him to be very knowledgeable of the backgrounds of many of the Island residents. A number of his stories about characters from the Island can be found in several books written about the area. Pictures of his gardens were shown in one of the books. His “Memories of Campobello” are being edited for a publication, which we soon hope to have at the library. Murray is survived by his sister Louisa Robertson, Kingston, NS, niece Sharon Hatt, nephew Larry Robertson. Great grandnieces Angela, Lori, Natalie, Shanara and great, great grand nephew Kael. Also a special life long friend who shares many of his interests, his cousin Beverly Corey. He was predeceased by a brother Godfrey.
