Fritz, Mary Elizabeth (Christmas), 76, Truro, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2009 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, surrounded by family members. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Chief Benjamin and Jane (Denny) Christmas of Membertou. Mary spent many years in Massachusetts working as a nursing assistant for over 35 years, where she also raised her family. Upon returning to Membertou First Nations in later years she began her second career working for the Sydney District School Board as a teacher’s assistant. Upon retirement she spent her time traveling, visiting her children and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and was also an active member of the Membertou Seniors Club. Mary enjoyed the annual pilgrimage to St. Anne De Beaupre, Quebec. She was an avid country western music fan and enjoyed singing and dancing with her many friends. Mary is survived by daughter, Cheryl Fritz, Millbrook; sons Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Gould, Big Cove, NB; Robert (Patricia), California; Richard (Steven Osgood), Vista, California; brother, Peter Christmas, Membertou; grandchildren, Tracy, Tim, Lisa, Emily, Melanie, Alex and Frankie; many nieces and nephews; godchild, Vicki Christmas. She was predeceased by sisters Helen, Pauline and Madelyn; brothers Victor, Augustus, Raymond and Patrick. Visitation will be held at 91 Fern Drive, Millbrook, beginning in the afternoon of Monday, August 31st through Wednesday, September 2nd. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 3rd at 2pm in St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, with Father Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens, Membertou First Nation. Flowers accepted. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
