Lou was born June 29, 1913 on her grandfather's homestead, at the top of the river valley on the south side of Saskatchewan Landing, SK. Her mother had come for a visit to the Homestead. Lou attended school in Redditt, Ontario where her father was a car inspector on the CN railroad. She attended school to Grade 8 and then went to work helping at home and other neighbors. When on holidays, visiting her Aunt and Uncle on the farm south of Matador Hamlet, she met Jesse Perrin from the Matador Community Pasture. After they became engaged, she went back to Redditt to be a waitress in the CNR restaurant. The job was 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and the pay was $20.00 per month. The trains stopped for only a short while and the meals had to be served with speed. On December 5, 1935 they were married in Swift Current. After a trip to Maple Creek and Olds, AB they went out to the Matador to start work again. Going home on the river ice which was used for a road, all of a sudden there was water in front of them, Grama screamed and Grampa slammed on the brakes of the old star coupe. The car stopped on a bit of an ice ridge that the waves had made on the edge of the hole. Grampa backed up and they drove around the air-hole. The air-hole had opened up while they were away on their honeymoon. All you Grandchildren should feel blessed that the car stopped before going in the water. When they got married they lived in the bunkhouse at the headquarters. When they moved to Summer Camp, they started out in a tent and eating in the cookhouse. Later that summer the Government built them a 12 by 20 one room shack. When Grama and Grampa got married, Grampa had been foreman since 1926. In 1939 he was made Manager when Mr. Valentine retired. They raised two sons; Ted was born March 18,1938 and Dennis was born December 30,1941. Ted boarded out for 4 years and when both boys were going to school, there was a house bought in Kyle. Grama moved a lot in her life. Winter camp in winter at the Headquarters, summer camp in summer and then five days in town when school was on and weekends at the ranch with grampa when the roads were open. After eight years in Kyle, the house was sold and grama stayed at the ranch with grampa. Grama's job for many years was doing the books and collecting the accounts at the Matador. The pay was $35.00 per month. Grama and Grampa got to know people from Glen Kerr to Cantuar on the south side of river and Lacadena to Lucky Lake on the north side. They retired from the Matador in 1962. In 1964 they moved to Alberta Beach to run a little ranch for Allan Hodgson. They moved to Medicine Hat in 1971 and spent 13 years there before moving back to Swift Current in 1984. They then moved to Beechy in 1988 where Grama had 21 years there. Grampa passed away in 2000. Grama attended the Anglican Church in Kyle and Beechy. Grama enjoyed picking chokecherries and making jelly. She gave most of it away. She loved gardening and flowers. She liked to go along the lake and look for fossils. She also liked spending time with friends, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren. The Funeral Service took place Monday, August 24, 2009 from the Hillside Christian Fellowship Church with Pastor Mike Housek and Reverend David Nevett officiating. The organist was Velma Wiens. The greeters were her granddaughters Chantelle and Nyel Helman. Register Attendants where great granddaughters Stacey Schellenberg. Ushers were Kirk Swan and Ian Esson.
