Verna Lilly Layton
Born In: Somerville, Massachusetts, United States
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Verna Lilly Layton.
Born in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Jessie (House) Hann.
A gifted teacher, Verna taught for over 30 years within the Cape Breton County School Board. She particularly enjoyed her years at Malcolm Munroe Junior High, where she established an extensive art curriculum to the delight of her many students. Her artistic touch was evident in every detail of her work; from her beautiful handwriting, to her many paintings which she humbly shared.
Her lifelong love of learning inspired a passion for genealogy in her retirement years, taking her on multiple adventures to Newfoundland, where she enjoyed uncovering the details of her family tree.
Verna was predeceased by brother, Cyril and nephew, Donnie.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Larry); grandchildren, Elaine (Gilleasbuig), Suzanne (Ben), Chris and great-granddaughter, Peigi. Also survived by sister-in-law, Phyllis; sister, Irene (Charlie); brother, Earl (Harriet) and her many nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered for imparting the most important lesson that no classroom could ever contain by living an exemplary life according to the “Golden Rule.”
No visitation by request. Private family service will be held at a later date.
Donations may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
“We held your hand and kissed you goodbye, but you will live in our hearts forever.”
