It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barry S. Holland, age 67, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Barry died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in the En Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in St. John's, Nfld., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Frances (Coffin) Holland. Barry had many careers throughout his life, beginning as a purchasing agent with Canadian Motor Industries and the Donkin Mine; executive assistant for Russell MacLellan; and most recently as the Cape Breton representative for Aqua Check/ACD, inspecting water supplies and installing Radon detectors, in many provincial buildings and sites.
Barry was a very community minded person who devoted many years as a member of the Kinsmen Club and the North Sydney Forum; he served two terms as a town councilor for the Town of North Sydney, and was instrumental in creating the Northside Industrial Commission. He was a lifetime member of the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney, and served as its secretary treasurer until the time of his death. He was tireless in his pursuit to rebuild the club following the fire which destroyed the former building a few years back, and was very proud of his efforts, and those of many others that have worked so hard to bring it back to life. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Barry had four loves in life, his family, the Yacht Club, camping and spending time on Keith Moores boat, “Bras d'Or Traveller.” He will be sadly missed by all his family and many friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian (Carter) Holland; his daughters, Joanne Phillips (Chris) of Ft. McMurray, Allison Holland (Jack Hatcher) of Estmere, Barbara (George) Taylor of Sydney Mines; his son, B.J. (Melanie) of Toronto; his dear grandchildren, Jonathan, Beth, Justin, Morgan, Sarah, Austin, Chance, Nolan; his sister, Gwen Orde of Saskatchewan; by his father and mother-in-law, with whom he was very close, Ches and Jean Carter, North Sydney, and all the members of the Carter family.
Visitation for Barry, will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, with Rev. Carl Fraser, officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church 3M campaign, or the Northern Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.
