Merritt Lionel Richardson

We, the family of Merritt Lionel Richardson, regret to announce his passing on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born March 22, 1922, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Frederick “Gus” and Amelia (Stubbert) Richardson.
A veteran of the Second World War, Merritt was a proud member of the Black Watch Regiment, serving in France, Germany and Holland. He was captured and for nine months was a prisoner of war. Merritt was a former deacon and choir member of the United Baptist Church, Sydney. An avid racing pigeon fancier, he was the owner of Tower View Loft and president of the Bluenose Racing Pigeon Club. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. As a young man, Merritt delivered milk with horse and wagon for his family dairy. For 20 years, he was employed at Sydney Steel, before becoming building superintendent at the Cape Breton Regional Vocational School.
Merritt is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Pearl (Johnston); daughters, Dale MacDonald, Arlene (Nelson) Watt and Merle, South Bar and Ruth (Dan) Morrison, Sydney; sons, Fred (Karen) and Donnie (Genevieve), South Bar; grandchildren, Ainsley, Drew, Kim, Jamie, Ashley, Vraya, Deirdre, Kenzie, Holly, Angus, Will and Anna; great-grandchildren, Duggan, Elsie, Miles, Alka, Gus, Rosie, Brett, Cameron, Harper and Josie.
The last surviving member of his immediate family, Merritt was predeceased by his sisters, Hazel Birch and Viola MacPhail and brothers, John, Cecil, Ivan, Howard, Calvin and Homer. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Andy MacDonald.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, March 10 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday, March 11 at 10 a.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home or palliative care at the Northside General Hospital.
