Eleanor Margaret MacLeod

Eleanor Margaret MacLeod

We, the family of Eleanor Margaret MacLeod, regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, peacefully at home.
Born June 28, 1932, in Sydney, she was the eldest daughter of the late Dan and Mary Ann (MacDonald) MacLeod.
Eleanor grew up in Juniper Mountain along the Mira River on a small farm, where she developed her strong work ethic and love of working outdoors. Her Gaelic speaking parents fostered an appreciation for Scottish music, which she enjoyed at square dances while young and listened faithfully at concerts and on radio in her later years. Eleanor was a graduate of the Empire Business College, Sydney and worked at Pollett’s Drug Store and the Nova Scotia Department of Public Health, until she started her family. She was a dedicated member of the former St. Andrew’s United Church and since amalgamation, the United Heritage Church. Eleanor volunteered countless hours during her lifetime, canvassing for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the United Appeal. Her true passion was shown during volunteer efforts with the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Auxiliary and for over 27 years, she sold bricks, calendars, tickets, baked goods and recruited many prizes for fundraising events, for which she received provincial recognition. Eleanor thoroughly enjoyed road trips, whether it be by plane or car to visit family and friends or as a proud Cape Bretoner, touring the Island, especially during the Celtic Colours Festival. Eleanor was a caring and thoughtful person, preparing meals for those in their time of need. She had a talent for baking and many were fortunate enough to be the recipients of those treats, as well as the recipes.
Eleanor is survived by her daughters, Norma MacLeod, Sydney River and Charlotte MacLeod (John Kennedy), Ottawa, Ont.; grandson, Carson; sister, Archiena (the late Doug) MacLeod, Sydney River; niece, Cynthia MacLeod; sisters-in-law, Mary Effie MacPherson and Margie Munroe, Marion Bridge.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Sam in 1992; sister, Norma MacLeod MacAdam; infant niece, Janice Elan; sisters-in-law, Catherine (Claude) Biron, Annie (Willard) MacLeod and Dolena (Camille) Tremblay; and brothers-in-law, Willie MacLeod and Sandy MacAdam.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton Street on Friday, March 8 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Marion Bridge at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
A special thank you to Lloyd John and Drew for helping her maintain her home and property over the years, of which she took great pride. Thank you to Linda Murphy, the palliative care home consultant nurse, Dr. Murdock Smith and all the wonderful staff of palliative care, the VON and the Cape Breton County Homemakers, who assisted during her illness.
