Neil Johnson, 92, of Mountainside Lodge, Fredericton, NB, and formerly of 34 Turner St., Glace Bay, NS, passed away peacefully at the lodge on August 23, 2009.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Archie Johnson and Annie McDonald. Neil joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1940 and was released at the end of the War with rank of Sergeant. He loved and supported the Royal Canadian Legion for many years and is a life time member.
Neil worked most of his life in the coal mines as a coal miner and underground manager. He had a passion for the outdoors: walking, fishing, berry picking, hiking, and golfing. Neil loved to paint scenic, country landscapes. He started to paint shortly after his retirement from the coal mines. His paintings are distributed throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario.
Neil was predeceased by his wife, Irene, after 69 years of marriage; infant son, Raymond; two sisters, Margaret Graham and Sadie Norris, both of Glace Bay, NS and one brother, Malcolm Johnson of Halifax, NS. Neil is survived by daughters, Alice (Don) Gardiner, Halifax, NS, Ann (Michael) Skinner, Halifax, NS, Ruth (Ernest) McCallum, Fredericton, NB and sons, Gordon (Dale) Johnson, Halifax and Roy (Chris) Johnson, Moncton, NB. Neil had nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay on Saturday, Sept, 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. The burial will follow at the Forest Haven Memorial Gardens immediately after the service.
