Marie Jane Sponagle, 80 of Avonport passed away peacefully on March 17, 2019 in the Valley Regional Hospital. Born in Melanson, she was the daughter of the late John and Jessie (Schofield) Oickle of Hants Border. Marie lived a full and productive life and loved her family with all her heart. She worked at various places over the years, such as CKF in Hantsport, the Black Forest Restaurant in New Minas, and the Wolfville Nursing Home. She spent many hours crocheting ponchos back in the day, and always had a house full of her children’s friends. She was an active member of the church and community when the children were young, playing the organ and piano, teaching Sunday school and leading various youth groups. She loved her flower garden, especially her black-eyed Susans. She loved playing video games, and her grandchildren all looked forward to visits at Nana Sponagle’s house to play them with her. In recent years, she enjoyed her weekly shopping trips to New Minas with her brother Brian and their trips to the south shore for sauerkraut. She religiously completed the Lexicon in the Friday newspaper each week. She adored Sydney Crosby and she and her husband Roland spent many hours watching him play hockey. Her love of music was passed on to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Roland; daughters Waydee (Blaine) Harris of Greenfield; Tanya Sponagle (Ronald LeBlanc) of Cambridge; Rhonda (Colin) Duncanson of Hortonville; Joanne (David) Harris of Avonport; brother Brian (Betty) Oickle of Hantsport; grandchildren Keegan Harris, Colton Harris, Casey Harris, Sara Sponagle, Samantha Sponagle (Jacob Gideon); nephews Wayne (Meghan), Mark (Jen), and Steven (Michelle), Gary (Judy) and nieces Joan (David) and Juanita. Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by her sister Iona Coldwell of Hants Border. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Service was held on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 1:00 pm in the Avonport Baptist Church followed by a reception. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of one’s choice.
