Florence Martha Hare (Matthews)

Florence Martha Hare (Matthews)

Flo would like you to know that her work here is done. She received a call, a sort of offer you can’t refuse, an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus; a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Her new journey takes her to a wonderful place, where she will be socializing, dancing, knitting, and reading to her heart’s content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. She has left detailed instructions for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends to celebrate her journey here, which has now completed.
On April 17, 2019, Flo’s journey here came to an end at the Alderwood Guest Home in Baddeck. She was 88 years old. This journey started November 27, 1930, in North Sydney, the eleventh child of Arthur and Sarah Jane (Davidge) Matthews. On August 6, 1948, she married her best friend in life, Lloyd Wilson Hare and they were blessed with a large and loving family. On her journey she kept very busy, in addition to caring for her family, Flo was very active within her church. St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney was her second home. She served as the church secretary for over eighteen years, was a member of the parish council, a former warden, Lay Reader, member of the church choir, Altar Guild and former president of ACW. She was the Camp Director for thirteen years and Camp Breton Dean. Flo was the Diocesan, regional and national representative for Mothers Union, national representative for Primates World Relief Development Fund (PWRDF), she served on the General Synod, had a lifetime membership in the Anglican Young People Association (AYPA) and was the first woman to be awarded the medal for Faithful Service by the Diocese of Nova Scotia and PEI in 2002. Even with all this, she made time for cake decorating, candy making, baking (those who did their Weight Watchers weigh-ins at her home had real will power), antique collecting, taking her grandchildren on adventures and of course, hosting the famous School House gatherings.
Loved ones that cleared a path for her are her husband Lloyd, brothers Russell, Aubrey, Melvin and brother Stephen during WW II, also her four sisters; Edna, Marjorie, Geraldine and Louise.
Loved ones that will miss Flo until they will meet again are her Daughter and Son-in-law Ferne and Jim Austin, Skye Glen, NS; Son and Daughter-in-law Rupert and Yolanda Hare, Florenceville, NB; Daughter and Son-in-law Lois and Len Hannem, Carvel, AB; Son and Daughter-in-law Arthur and Lea Bryson-Hare, Sundre, AB; Thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends including those who loved her at Alderwood.
We want her to know that she did a great job and wish her a safe journey. We will remember her smile, her warmth, her energy, her faith, her love for life, family and friends. She made a difference in the lives of many.
Visitation for Flo will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, April 22, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery following service. Reception to follow. Family flowers only.
