It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Michael J. ‘Shorty’ Mac Neil at home on June 4, 2011.
He was born in Ottawa Brook on April 4, 1926, and was the son of the late Dan J.J Mac Neil and Sarah Ann Mac Neil.
He was a member of the St. Columba parish, Iona. Shorty worked for the CNR with the section gang for 18 years, followed by the Department of Transportation on the Iona/Grand Narrows ferry from which he retired in 1991 after 21 years of dedicated service.
Shorty was an avid card player and many tables bear his mark. Shorty always enjoyed visiting his family and friends and his weekly bingo games.
Shorty is survived by sons, Daniel J. (Charlene), Lower Washabuck, Colin (Wendy), Ottawa Brook, Hector (Nancy), Sydney Mines, Gregory (Elizabeth), Jamesville, Neil James (Lorraine), Ottawa Brook; and one daughter, Sadie Marie (Franklin) Mac Neil, Ottawa Brook; grandchildren, Adam, Elliott, Holly, Laura, Bonnie, Lisa, Natalie, Randy, Trevor, Jamie, Hannah, Sarah, Crystal, Cindy and Craig; great-grandchildren, Shamus and Taylor; his brother in-law, Alfred McLean; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Annie in May, 2000, as well as his two sisters, Isabel McLean and Rhodena MacLellan.
Visitation will be held at St. Columba Parish Centre on Tuesday, June 7 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 8, 11 a.m. at St. Columba Church with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, MacKinnon’s Harbour.
Family flowers only by request.
